GoHighLevel triggers

By Marnix Geerkens. Updated 2026-05-28.

In short

A trigger is the event that starts a workflow automation in GoHighLevel. Without a trigger, nothing happens. Common triggers include a contact submitting a form, booking or missing an appointment, clicking a link in an email, being tagged, or a specific date arriving. You can stack multiple triggers on one workflow and add filter conditions so the workflow only fires for the right people.

Types of triggers

Form and survey submissions, funnel page visits, and calendar bookings are the most common entry points for new leads. These fire the moment the action happens in real time.

Contact-based triggers fire when something changes on the record: a tag is added or removed, a field value changes, or a contact is assigned to a user. Pipeline triggers fire when a deal moves between stages.

Date triggers fire on a specific date or a set number of days before or after a date field. This is what powers birthday messages, renewal reminders, and follow-up sequences tied to deal close dates.

Trigger filters and conditions

A trigger filter narrows who enters the workflow. For example, the trigger "form submitted" with a filter "tag does not contain existing-client" means only new leads enter. Without filters, every form submission would start the workflow regardless of who submitted it.

You can combine multiple filter conditions with AND or OR logic to get very precise about who qualifies.

Multiple triggers on one workflow

One workflow can have multiple triggers. If you want the same onboarding sequence to start whether someone books a call or fills out a contact form, you add both as triggers on the same workflow. This avoids building two identical workflows.

Frequently asked questions

What is a trigger in GoHighLevel?

A trigger is the event that starts a workflow. No trigger means no automation runs. Examples include form submissions, appointment bookings, tag additions, and date-based events.

Can I use multiple triggers in one workflow?

Yes. You can add several triggers to a single workflow. When any of them fires (and conditions are met), the workflow starts for that contact.

What happens if a contact triggers a workflow twice?

By default, GoHighLevel will not re-enter a contact into a workflow they are already in. You can change this setting if you want re-entry, for example for a weekly newsletter sequence.

Are triggers real-time?

Yes. Triggers like form submissions and appointment bookings fire immediately when the event happens. Date-based triggers check at a scheduled interval (usually within a few minutes of the trigger time).
