Summary. SMS message templates in GoHighLevel are reusable text messages stored under the Marketing tab. You write the message once, save it with a clear name, and then pull it into any conversation from the SMS reply box. Templates support custom values and trigger links, so they can be personalized automatically when sent. They save time on repetitive replies and keep your messaging consistent.

What you will learn

  • Create an SMS template inside the Marketing tab
  • Use custom values to personalize templates automatically
  • Attach files or media to a template via URL
  • Insert a saved template into a live conversation
  • Edit or delete templates from the template list

Steps

  1. Navigate to Marketing and open Templates

Inside your GoHighLevel sub-account, click the Marketing tab in the top navigation. Then click Templates from the options that appear.

  2. Create a new text template

Click the green Add Template button and choose Add Text Template from the dropdown. This opens the SMS template editor.

  3. Name the template

Give the template a name that describes its purpose, such as 'New Lead Welcome' or 'Appointment Reminder'. A clear name makes it faster to find when you are in a live conversation.

  4. Write your message

Type the message body. Use custom values from the dropdown to insert contact details like first name automatically. You can also add a trigger link if you want to track clicks or send contacts to a specific page.

  5. Attach a file if needed

If the message needs an image or document, attach it directly or paste in a file URL. The preview panel on the right shows how the message will appear when received.

  6. Test and save

Enter a phone number in the test field and send a test version to yourself. Once it looks right, click Save. The template now appears in your template list.

  7. Use the template in a conversation

Go to the Conversations tab and open a contact thread. Choose SMS as the message type, then click the Insert Template icon. Select your template from the dropdown and click Use Template. The message populates the text field ready to send.

Tips

  • Name templates consistently so they sort predictably as the list grows.
  • Test every template with a real phone number to catch formatting issues before they reach a contact.
  • Keep templates short. SMS messages over 160 characters split into multiple segments, which can look awkward.
