How to Edit or Delete Custom Fields in GoHighLevel
By Marnix Geerkens. Published 2023-06-06. Updated 2026-06-02.
Custom fields in GoHighLevel can be edited or deleted from the Custom Fields settings page. Select any field using its checkbox, open the Bulk Actions menu, and choose Edit or Delete. Editing lets you update the field's name, placeholder text, and pre-fill value. Deleting removes it permanently. Default system fields like first name and last name can only be moved between groups; they cannot be edited or deleted.

Summary. Over time your data model changes and custom fields need updating or cleaning up. This tutorial shows the exact steps to edit a custom field's label and settings, delete fields you no longer need, and understand which fields are protected system defaults that cannot be changed.
What you will learn
- Locate the Custom Fields settings page inside your sub-account
- Select fields using the checkbox and open Bulk Actions
- Edit a field's name, placeholder, and pre-fill value
- Delete custom fields you no longer use
- Understand which default fields cannot be edited or deleted
Steps
Go to Settings and open Custom Fields
Inside your sub-account, open Settings and find the Custom Fields section. You will see all existing fields listed, including any grouped under folders.
Select the field you want to edit or delete
Click the checkbox to the left of the field name. You can select multiple fields at once if you want to delete several in bulk.
Open Bulk Actions
With at least one field checked, scroll to the top of the list and click Bulk Actions. You will see options to Edit, Delete, or Move to a Group.
Edit the field
Click Edit. A panel opens where you can update the field's name, placeholder text, and pre-fill value. The field type, group, and object (Contact or Opportunity) are locked after creation. Make your changes and click Save.
Delete a field
Select the field, click Bulk Actions, then click Delete. Confirm the deletion. The field is removed from all contact records. Fields that cannot be deleted (like first name and last name) will only show the Move to Group option in Bulk Actions.
Tips
- If you accidentally delete a custom field, check the Deleted Fields section on the Custom Fields page. You may be able to restore it.
- Rename fields with clear labels before using them in forms or automations so your team always knows what the field contains.
