How to Train Conversation AI in GoHighLevel

By Marnix Geerkens. Published 2024-01-03. Updated 2026-06-02.

GoHighLevel's Conversation AI can be trained on three types of source material: a website URL, a publicly shared document, and manually entered questions and answers. Training takes under a minute per source. Once trained, the bot draws on that knowledge when replying to customers in suggestive or autopilot mode. You can verify results immediately using the built-in bot trial tool.

Summary. This tutorial walks through the Conversation AI settings inside a GoHighLevel sub-account, covering how to configure autopilot mode, set message limits, and train the bot on a website URL, a shared Google Doc, and a custom Q&A session. It also demonstrates how to test the bot's knowledge using bot trial and how to fix gaps by adding more Q&A pairs.

What you will learn

  • Navigate to Conversation AI settings and understand the difference between suggestive and autopilot mode
  • Configure intent settings, including appointment booking and calendar selection
  • Train the bot by pointing it at a website URL or a publicly shared document
  • Add manual Q&A pairs to fill in knowledge gaps or correct wrong answers
  • Use the bot trial tool to verify training before going live

Steps

  1. Open Conversation AI settings

Go to Settings in your sub-account and select Conversational AI. Here you can switch between suggestive mode (bot suggests replies for you to send) and autopilot mode (bot replies on its own).

  2. Set your channels, message limit, and save

Choose which channels the bot will be active on, such as SMS, Facebook, or the chat widget. Set a maximum message count to control costs, then click Save.

  3. Configure intents

Click Configure Intents and turn on appointment booking. Select the calendar you want the bot to use, and choose whether it books directly or sends a booking link to the contact.

  4. Train on a website URL

Go to Bot Training and paste a URL. Choose whether to train on that exact page, all pages within the same path, or the entire domain. Click Get Data and wait for confirmation that the data loaded.

  5. Train on a document

In Google Docs (or a similar tool), open sharing settings and set the document to viewable by anyone with the link. Copy that link, paste it into Bot Training the same way you would a website URL, and click Get Data.

  6. Add Q&A pairs to fix gaps

If the bot trial reveals incorrect or missing answers, go to the Q&A training section and add the question and the correct answer manually. The bot will prioritize these over other trained content.

  7. Verify with bot trial

Click Bot Trial, start a conversation, and ask questions that match the topics you trained on. Confirm the answers are accurate before switching the bot to autopilot for real customers.

Tips

  • Set the maximum message count to a specific number rather than unlimited to avoid unexpected costs
  • Make sure shared documents are publicly accessible before pasting the URL, otherwise the bot will not be able to read them
  • Q&A pairs are the most reliable training method when you need a precise, controlled answer

Usually a few seconds. If it fails, use the refresh button to retry.

Can the bot book appointments directly or only send a link?

Both options are available in the intent configuration settings.

What is the bot trial tool used for?

It lets you test the bot's replies live before activating it for real customers.
