What Are Agentic Payments? AI Agent Wallets Explained

In short

Agentic payments are payments an AI agent initiates and completes on its own, without a human clicking approve at checkout. A person sets the budget and rules up front, then the agent pays for API calls, subscriptions, or purchases as it works. x402, AP2, and AWS AgentCore Payments are the standards defining how this works today.

How do AI agents actually pay for things?

Most AI agents today can browse, plan, and fill out a checkout form, but a human still has to click confirm and hand over a card. Agentic payments remove that last click. A person sets a budget, a spending cap, and a set of rules ahead of time, for example "this agent can spend up to $50 a day on API calls." The agent then completes the purchase itself: it finds the price, proves it is authorized to spend, and moves the money, without anyone watching the screen.

Three things have to exist for this to work safely: a way for the agent to prove who it is acting for, a way to check the purchase is inside the rules the human set, and a payment rail that can settle instantly, since a human is not there to sit through a multi-day approval. x402, AP2, and AWS AgentCore Payments are three different answers to that problem, built by three different companies.

What is x402?

x402 is an open payment protocol built by Coinbase. It revives an old, mostly unused piece of the web: HTTP status code 402, "Payment Required." When an AI agent requests a paid API endpoint, the server can respond with a 402 status and a price instead of an error. The agent's wallet pays that price instantly in a stablecoin such as USDC, then resends the same request, and the server returns the data.

There is no account to create, no API key to request in advance, and no monthly subscription. Each request pays for itself. That makes x402 a natural fit for an agent calling dozens of small, unpredictable APIs while it works, since nobody wants to set up a subscription for every tool an agent might touch in a given hour.

What is AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol)?

AP2 is an open protocol from Google for letting an AI agent make a payment on a person's behalf. Instead of the agent holding a card number directly, AP2 uses signed digital records called mandates. A mandate is proof, cryptographically signed by the human, of exactly what the agent is allowed to buy, up to what amount, and under what conditions.

When the agent finds something to buy, it presents the mandate to the merchant or payment processor as evidence the purchase was authorized in advance. AP2 is built to work over existing payment rails (cards, bank transfers) as well as stablecoins, so it is less about one specific way to move money and more about proving, after the fact, that an agent's purchase was actually approved.

What is AWS Bedrock AgentCore Payments?

AWS added a Payments capability to Bedrock AgentCore, its platform for building and running AI agents, in May 2026. AgentCore already handles parts of running an agent that are hard to build yourself: memory, identity, tool use, and a secure place to execute code. AgentCore Payments extends that to money, so an agent built on AWS can request approval for a purchase and settle a payment as a built-in part of the agent runtime, instead of a developer wiring a separate payment integration by hand for every project.

It plays a similar role to x402 and AP2, but it is AWS's own answer, built specifically for agents that already live inside the Bedrock AgentCore stack.

What is an AI agent wallet?

An AI agent wallet is a wallet the agent itself can spend from, separate from a person's own bank account or card. It typically holds a stablecoin balance or a scoped, revocable payment credential, plus limits the human owner sets: a daily cap, a list of approved merchants or categories, or a rule that anything over a threshold needs a human to approve first.

Coinbase, which built x402, is one of the companies shipping wallet infrastructure aimed specifically at agents rather than people, and searches for "wallet for AI agents" were one of the fastest-rising queries tied to AI agents in mid 2026. That tracks: as agents start acting on their own, they need something to spend from that is not simply a copy of the human's own card.

Why does this matter if you run a GoHighLevel agency?
