How to Add an AI Chatbot to a GoHighLevel Website
By Marnix Geerkens. Published 2026-08-22. Updated 2026-08-22.
In short
GoHighLevel's Conversation AI is a built-in chatbot that reads your training data and replies to leads across chat, SMS, Facebook, and Instagram. You turn it on in Settings, train it on FAQs, a website, or a Google Doc, then pick suggestive mode or auto-pilot. It is billed per usage and can make mistakes, so a human should still watch it.
- Conversation AI is built into GoHighLevel, so there is no separate chatbot tool to buy.
- You train it on FAQs, a website URL, or a Google Doc, then choose how much it answers on its own.
- It replies in the chat widget on funnels and sites, plus SMS, Facebook, and Instagram.
What is GoHighLevel Conversation AI?
Conversation AI is GoHighLevel's own chatbot. It reads the training data you give it and writes replies to leads in your own words. It is not a separate product you connect. It ships inside the platform, and the newer version is often called Conversation AI V3.
The chatbot lives on top of your conversations, so it can answer a website visitor, a text message, and a Facebook message with the same brain. You teach it once, and it uses that knowledge everywhere you switch it on.
How do you turn on Conversation AI in GoHighLevel?
You find it inside a sub-account under Settings, then Conversation AI. That screen is where you train the bot and set how it behaves. To make the bot reply, you also switch it on for the channel you want, such as the web chat widget, SMS, or a Facebook page.
The chat widget itself is a separate piece. You add the widget to a funnel or website page from the Sites area, then let Conversation AI answer the messages that come through it. So there are two steps: place the widget where visitors can see it, and enable the AI to respond.
How do you train the chatbot on FAQs, a website, or Google Docs?
Training is where the bot gets useful. In the Conversation AI settings you feed it the answers it should know. GoHighLevel gives you a few ways to do this, so you can start small and add more later.
- FAQs: write question-and-answer pairs by hand for the things people ask most.
- Website or URLs: point the bot at pages so it can pull answers from content you already published.
- Documents: import content, such as a Google Doc you export, so the bot learns from a longer write-up.
Good training data is the whole game. A bot trained on clear, current answers stays helpful. A bot trained on thin or out-of-date notes gives thin or wrong replies. Review what you feed it before you let it talk to real leads.
Suggestive mode vs auto-pilot: which bot mode should you use?
GoHighLevel lets you set how much the bot does on its own. In suggestive mode, the AI drafts a reply and waits for a person to read it and hit send. In auto-pilot mode, the AI sends the reply itself with no human in the loop.
Start in suggestive mode. Watch the drafts for a week or two and fix the training when a reply is off. Once the answers are consistently right, you can move a specific channel to auto-pilot. Handing full control to a bot you have not tested is how a wrong answer reaches a customer before you catch it.
Where does the AI chatbot show up for your leads?
The most visible spot is the chat widget on a funnel or website page, where a visitor types a question and the bot replies. That is the piece most people picture when they think of a website chatbot.
Conversation AI is not limited to the website, though. Once trained, it can also answer over SMS, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, using the same knowledge. That means one setup covers a lead who texts you, a lead who messages your Facebook page, and a visitor on your site.
A common next step is letting the bot book calls, not just answer questions. Our AI appointment setting guide covers how the bot moves a chat toward a booked slot on your calendar.
What are the honest limits, and when do you need a human?
Conversation AI is helpful, but it is not magic, and it is fair to say so. It can hallucinate, which means it can state something confidently that is not true, especially on a topic your training data did not cover. It is only as good as the data you give it. And it is billed per usage, so heavy volume adds cost you should watch.
Hand off to a human when the lead is upset, when money or a contract is on the table, or when the bot clearly does not know the answer. A good rule is to let the AI handle the common, low-risk questions and route anything sensitive to a real person. The AI saves you time on the easy 80 percent. It should not be the last word on the hard 20 percent.
Frequently asked questions
Is GoHighLevel Conversation AI free?
Conversation AI is built into GoHighLevel rather than sold as a separate product, but it is billed based on usage. The more messages the bot handles, the more it can cost. Check your current account billing for the exact usage rate before you switch it to auto-pilot.
How do I add the chatbot to my website or funnel?
Place the chat widget on a funnel or website page from the Sites area, then enable Conversation AI to answer the messages that come through it. The widget is what visitors see and click, and the AI is the brain that writes the replies.
What can I train the GoHighLevel chatbot on?
You can train it on FAQ pairs you write by hand, on website pages or URLs it reads, and on imported documents such as a Google Doc you export. Clear, current training data is the single biggest factor in whether the bot gives good answers.
What is the difference between suggestive mode and auto-pilot?
In suggestive mode the AI drafts a reply and a person reviews and sends it. In auto-pilot mode the AI sends replies on its own with no human step. Start suggestive, check the drafts, and only move to auto-pilot once the answers are reliably correct.
Can the chatbot answer SMS and Facebook, not just website chat?
Yes. Once trained, Conversation AI can reply across the web chat widget, SMS, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, using the same knowledge. One setup covers a lead who texts you, one who messages your Facebook page, and one on your website.
Can the GoHighLevel AI chatbot give wrong answers?
Yes. Like any AI, it can hallucinate, which means it can state something confidently that is not true, especially outside its training. Review its replies in suggestive mode first, keep the training data current, and route sensitive questions to a human.
When should a human take over from the chatbot?
Hand off to a person when the lead is upset, when money or a contract is involved, or when the bot clearly does not know the answer. Let the AI handle common, low-risk questions and keep a human on the hard or sensitive ones.
Do I need to write code to set up Conversation AI?
No. Setup happens in the GoHighLevel Settings screens: you train the bot, pick a mode, and enable it on a channel. Placing the chat widget on a page is done in the Sites builder. None of it requires writing code.
