What GoHighLevel Voice AI does
Voice AI is a conversational phone agent built directly into GoHighLevel. When a call comes in (or when a workflow triggers an outbound call), the AI picks up, says a greeting you write, and handles the conversation in real time.
It can answer common questions using a knowledge base you build from your website, PDFs, or typed content. It can check calendar availability and book appointments without any human involvement. It can gather caller information and push it straight into the CRM as a contact or an opportunity.
When a caller asks to speak to someone, or when the AI cannot answer a question, it transfers the call to a team member you designate. You set the rules for when a transfer happens.
Every call gets a transcript saved in the conversation thread. You can review what was said, flag issues, and use the transcript to improve the prompt.
How to set up Voice AI in GoHighLevel
First, go to Settings, then Phone Numbers, and assign a number to a Voice AI agent. If you do not have a number yet, you can buy one directly in GHL through LC Phone.
Second, open the Voice AI section under Conversations or the dedicated AI Employees area, depending on your GHL version. Create a new agent, write a system prompt describing the persona and what it should do, and attach the phone number.
Third, connect a knowledge base if you want the agent to answer questions about your business. You can scrape your website URL or paste text content.
Fourth, configure calendar booking by linking the agent to a specific GHL calendar. The agent will check availability in real time and confirm the slot with the caller.
Finally, set up call transfer rules. Define a phrase or a condition that triggers a warm transfer to a team member.
Common use cases
Missed call text-back plus voice follow-up: when a lead calls and hangs up, a workflow sends a text and later triggers a Voice AI outbound call to reconnect.
After-hours receptionist: the AI answers calls when your office is closed, collects the reason for calling, and books a callback or appointment for the next day.
Appointment confirmation calls: the day before a scheduled appointment, Voice AI calls the contact, confirms the time, and reschedules if needed, all without staff involvement.
Lead qualification: for inbound inquiries, Voice AI asks a set of qualifying questions, scores the lead, and routes hot leads to a sales rep immediately via transfer.
Database reactivation: send outbound Voice AI calls to a list of old contacts to check in, offer something new, and book a call with a closer.
Voice AI compared to third-party services like Vapi and Retell
The main difference is integration depth. GHL Voice AI is native to the platform, so bookings, contact updates, and workflow triggers all happen inside GHL without webhooks or Zapier steps. Vapi and Retell are standalone voice AI platforms that you connect to GHL via API or Zapier.
Third-party voice AI tools give you more control over the underlying LLM and voice model, which matters if you need very specific tone or multi-language support. GHL Voice AI is simpler to set up and good enough for most appointment-booking and FAQ use cases.
For many agencies and local businesses, GHL Voice AI is the right starting point because it requires no extra subscription and the setup takes minutes, not days.
